ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team belted two home runs and scored six runs over the first three innings but could not keep pace with Washington, dropping the series finale, 10-7, on Sunday (March 22) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
Long balls accounted for five of the Wolverines' seven runs. Junior center fielder Jenissa Conway delivered the biggest swing of the day, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the second, while senior third baseman Maddie Erickson added another key blast, launching a two-run homer to left field, her second of the weekend, to tie the game in the third.
Michigan finished with nine hits, spreading production throughout the lineup. Senior second baseman Indiana Langford and sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz posted two hits apiece, along with Conway at the top of the order. Putz added a pair of walks to reach base in all four plate appearances.
Despite the offensive output, Michigan was unable to overcome Washington's steady attack. The Wolverines allowed 10 runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, and five walks.
Freshman RHP Grayson LaMarche (2-2) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs, just two earned, on four hits and two walks over four innings. Washington took the lead for good after manufacturing two runs on a fielding error and groundout in the fifth and added insurance with a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Wolverines (19-12) will remain at home next weekend (Fri-Sun., March 27-29) when they host Purdue for a three-game set at Hutchins Stadium. The series kicks off with a 5 p.m. start on Friday. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
