ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team scored in every inning, including nine runs across the second and third, to cruise to a 13-6, five-inning decision in the series rubber game against Purdue on Sunday afternoon (March 29) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field. It was the Wolverines' second run-rule victory of the weekend and first Big Ten series win of the season.
The Wolverines totaled 16 hits from eight different players and utilized a wide array of offensive approaches to get on base and move runners, from beating out infield singles to outfield flares and line drives through the gaps.
Senior leftfielder Indiana Langford set the tone at the top of the lineup, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. She singled to short to lead off the first and scored when sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz sent a low liner back to the Boilermaker shortstop, who then overthrew first.
The Boilermakers knocked out two-run homers in both the second and third innings, with all six of their runs coming on long balls, to briefly take the lead and later pull within one. Michigan answered both times, including a five-run third inning to build a six-run cushion.
Michigan loaded the bases in both innings. Junior RHP Erin Hoehn sparked a two-out rally in the second with a two-run double down the leftfield line. Junior designated player Ella Stephenson and redshirt junior catcher Lilly Vallimont followed with RBI singles. Stephenson chopped an infield single off the pitcher's glove, while Vallimont drove the second pitch after a Purdue pitching change into the left-center gap.
Putz, Hoehn, Stephenson and Vallimont each posted two hits and two RBI in the game.
Senior first baseman Madi Ramey led off the third with a solo homer to rightfield, her third of the season, and the next three Wolverines reached to load the bases for Putz, who drove a hard ground ball to rightfield to plate two. She and junior centerfielder Jenissa Conway executed a successful double steal in the next at-bat, with Conway sliding in safely at the plate.
Langford added an RBI on a bloop single over the third baseman's head in the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs in the fifth, Michigan pushed across runs in back-to-back at-bats on a Vallimont flare to left and senior third baseman Maddie Erickson's game-ending hit-by-pitch.
Hoehn (5-3) started and earned the win, allowing five runs on eight hits with no walks over four innings. Junior RHP Gabby Ellis entered in relief in the fifth and walked the leadoff batter before U-M turned a 5-3 double play to end the game on just seven pitches.
The Wolverines (21-13, 2-7 Big Ten) will wrap their seven-game homestand with a 4 p.m. matchup against Oakland on Tuesday (March 31) at Hutchins Stadium. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
