
Maize and Blue Wins Seventh Straight in Shutout of Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team rolled to its seventh straight win, shutting out Wisconsin, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon (March 29) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Michigan won the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At the top spot, Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones picked up a 6-3 win as the first match to finish.
U-M's No. 3 pair of Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde clinched the doubles point for the maize and blue for a second straight match with a 6-4 win at No. 3. The pair rallied from an early hole to put the first point on the board for Michigan.
Michigan won five first sets in singles action, keeping the momentum from doubles alive.Â
Emily Sartz-Lunde, who had clinched Michigan's last three matches, was the first off court to extend the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Reese Miller followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win of her own at No. 3, pushing Michigan's lead to 3-0. Miller went up a break at 4-2 in the second set and kept it the rest of the way to get the win.
Wisconsin did not go away, winning second sets at No. 1 and No. 4 to extend the team match.
Bernales did the honors for Michigan, winning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 match at No. 4. After dropping her second set to head to a third, Bernales raced out to an early 4-1 lead. She broke Ellison Reynoldson in the final game, winning on a double fault on the deuce point.
The remaining matches on court were abandoned as Michigan moved to 7-1 in Big Ten action.
Michigan continues its road swing next weekend, first heading to Illinois to face the Illini on Saturday (April 4) at 11 a.m. CT.
