
Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Michigan to Win over No. 14 Colorado

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a tightly contested game that saw neither team lead by more than two goals, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team used three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to earn an 8-7 win over No. 14 Colorado on Sunday afternoon (March 8) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The game featured three ties and two lead changes in a one-goal victory for the Wolverines (5-2) as Peyton Shreves scored the unassisted game-winner with three minutes remaining. The stout U-M defense kept the Buffaloes (4-2) off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, including forcing a turnover in the final minute to seal the win.
Graduate student Ava Class and senior Calli Norris each recorded a hat trick to lead the Michigan offense, while Shreves and Emma Bradbury added one goal apiece. Ceci Stein, Class, Caroline Byrd and Truus van Wees all registered assists in the victory.
The Wolverines dominated the draw, 13-5, as Emma Burke won nine draw controls and Norris collected four. Senior Taylor Cullen caused two turnovers on the defensive end, while Class added three caused turnovers in the midfield.
In the cage, Elizabeth Johnson made 10 saves, including three in the fourth quarter to help Michigan secure the victory.
Class put the Wolverines on the board less than two minutes into the contest, but Colorado quickly answered to tie the score at 1-1. Norris capitalized on a free-position opportunity with just over two minutes left in the first quarter to give Michigan a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
The Buffaloes tied the game three minutes into the second quarter before Norris converted her second free-position goal of the day to put Michigan back in front. Michigan worked the ball around its offensive end to find the open shot as van Wees fed Class inside to extend the lead to 4-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Colorado answered with just over five minutes to play, but Michigan forced a midfield turnover and capitalized as Class fed Bradbury to give U-M a 5-3 lead at halftime.
The Buffaloes opened the second half with four goals in the third quarter while Michigan was unable to find offensive rhythm, entering the final 15 minutes trailing 7-5.
Michigan regrouped and scored three straight goals in a four-minute span, including a bounce-in from Shreves to take the 8-7 lead with 3:06 remaining. The goal stood as the game-winner as the defense forced a turnover in the final minute to secure the home victory.
U-M opens Big Ten Conference play Sunday (March 15) against USC at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
