U-M Opens Big Ten Season with 4-3 Win Over Spartans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won its 12th straight match against rival Michigan State, pulling out a 4-3 victory Wednesday (Feb. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan won its fifth straight Big Ten opener and improved to 2-2 on the season, while Michigan State lost its first match on the year (6-1).
The Wolverines fell behind 1-0 after the Spartans won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the team point. Michigan's lone doubles victory came as juniors Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) claimed an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 spot.
Michigan won the match with four singles victories at the first four slots in the lineup. Hart won a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles over MSU's Brooke West (7-5, 6-1), while sophomore Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) fought back from a first-set loss to post a three-set victory over Niki Skogerboe (5-7, 6-3, 7-5) at the No. 2 spot.
Senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) defeated Isabell Oelze at No. 3 singles and sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) earned a hard-fought, three-set victory at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-7, 7-5) to claim the match.
The Wolverines will head east for a two-day, two-match Big Ten swing. Michigan will face Ohio State on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 10 a.m. and Penn State on Sunday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m. before returning home for a pair of home matches next weekend against No. 2 Duke and No. 9 Wake Forest.
