ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (16-9) capped its regular season with a statement win, defeating No. 10 Indiana (15-7), 11-9, on Saturday (April 4) at Canham Natatorium. The victory came on Senior Day, as Michigan honored Riley Chapple, Claire Eusey, Lulu Hirschfield, Brooke Ingram and Issy Jackson in their final home regular-season contest.
And it was Hirschfield, who delivered the decisive moment late, scoring a goal with just under two minutes left to play, to help secure the win for the Wolverines.
Michigan set the tone early with a strong opening quarter, racing out to a 6-1 lead. Emma Gustafsson wasted no time getting the Wolverines on the board, scoring just 20 seconds into the match from beyond the six-meter line. Emilia Mladjan fueled the offensive surge with three first-half goals, recording her third hat trick of the season.
Harriet Dickens added Michigan's lone goal of the second quarter, while the Wolverines' defense held firm. Goalkeeper Sophia Bunnell anchored the unit with a strong first half in net, and Ingram, Ari Karampetsou and Hirschfield contributed key field blocks to limit Indiana's opportunities.
The Hoosiers opened the second half with a push, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 7-5. Michigan responded in the third quarter, with Gustafsson netting a pair of goals -- including a highlight-worthy, behind-the-back finish into the upper corner off an assist from Karampetsou -- to help the Wolverines maintain control and carry a four-goal lead into the final period.
Indiana made one last surge in the fourth, scoring four goals to tighten the margin, but Michigan held on down the stretch to secure the two-goal victory.
With the regular season complete, the Wolverines will turn their attention to postseason play. Michigan will host the CWPA Championship at Canham Natatorium, April 10-12. No. 3 seed Michigan will kick off play against sixth-seeded Mercyhurst on Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m.
