ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Battling windy and chilly conditions, senior Lauren Sung fought through a challenging second round at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, carding a 73 (+2) on Tuesday (May 12) at U-M Golf Course to remain among the top 20 individuals. She is tied for 18th with a 36-hole total of 144 (+2).
Sung, who is within striking distance of advancing individually, will close out her NCAA Regional on Wednesday (May 13), teeing off from No. 10 at 9:50 a.m. She will once again be paired with Georgia's Trinity Beth (35th, 149) and IU Indy's Yanah Rolston (57th, 158).
Starting her second round, Sung used a birdie on the par-4, fourth hole to quickly move under par. After a pair of pars, she bogeyed the par-4 seventh to fall back to even, where she remained heading into the turn.
With clouds rolling in and chilly winds beginning to swirl on the back nine, Sung bogeyed her opening hole after the turn to move to one-over par before settling in with three straight pars. A third bogey of the day dropped her to two-over as she entered the home stretch.
Closing with four straight pars, Sung carded a 73 (+2) and is tied for 18th with a 36-hole total of 144.
With a 36-hole total of 569 (279-290), Ohio State holds a one-shot lead entering the final round of the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional. Northwestern (279-291) and USC (282-288) are tied for second at 570, while Texas Tech used the low team round of the day at 285 (+1) to climb into fourth at 573 (288-285). Duke rounds out the top five at 576 (286-290).
Northwestern's Ashley Yun maintained her individual lead with a two-day total of 135 (-6; 66-69). Ohio State's Matilde Santilli and Texas Tech teammates Maja Ambroziak and Lauren Zaretsky are tied for second at 139 (-3).
The top five teams from each regional site, along with the top two individuals not on advancing teams, will earn spots in the NCAA Finals, scheduled for May 22-27 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
