EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior RHP Gabby Ellis tossed a one-hit gem to lead the University of Michigan softball team's 3-1 win in its regular-season finale against rival Michigan State on Sunday afternoon (May 3) at Secchia Stadium. The Wolverines earned their first Big Ten Conference sweep this season with the win.
Ellis (11-6) went the distance for the second straight game, allowing no earned runs, one hit -- a third-inning infield single -- and five walks with three strikeouts. MSU scored its lone run after two errors with two outs in the fifth.
Sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored Michigan's first run with two outs in the third. She ripped a grounder through the right-center gap for her second triple of the season and came home when the Spartan rightfielder misplayed the ball at the wall.
The Wolverines manufactured another run after junior centerfielder Jenissa Conway drew a leadoff walk in the fourth. She advanced two bases on a throwing error on a fielder's choice and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Madi Ramey.
Defensive miscues led to the MSU run in the fifth, and the Spartans again capitalized on back-to-back errors to load the bases in the sixth. U-M escaped the jam with a fielder's choice at third base, then immediately reestablished its two-run lead with freshman Kiley Carr's leadoff home run in the top of the sixth. Carr drove the ball to centerfield for her third home run of the season.
MSU used a one-out walk to reach in the seventh, but Ellis retired the next two Spartans with a strikeout and a lineout to Carr at short.
The Wolverines (33-19, 11-13 Big Ten) will await the conclusion of conference play to learn their Big Ten Tournament seed and first-round opponent. The tournament is scheduled for May 6-9 in College Park, Md. Michigan is the two-time defending Big Ten Tournament champion.
