Michigan at the 2014 Sochi Olympics
Three former University of Michigan ice hockey teammates competed for three countries at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, while U-M students made up five-sixths of the United States ice dancing team. The eight Michigan representatives combined to earn five medals.
Carl Hagelin picked up a silver medal with Sweden in his first Olympics, becoming the seventh U-M ice hockey alumnus to win an Olympic medal. Hagelin scored a pair of goals as the Swedes won five games in a row before losing 3-0 to Canada in the gold-medal game.
Max Pacioretty (USA) and Brian Lebler (Austria) also made their Olympic debuts. Team USA won its first four games to reach the semifinals but dropped a 1-0 decision to Canada before falling to Finland in the bronze-medal game. Lebler posted a pair of assists against Finland, and Austria finished the Games with a 1-3 record.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White became the first American ice dancing pair to capture Olympic gold, four years after earning the silver medal in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Wolverine duo posted record scores in both the short dance and free dance to displace defending gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada.
All three American teams finished among the top 10, with U-M alumnus Evan Bates and his partner, Madison Chock, placing eighth, and siblings Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani taking ninth. It was the second Olympics for Davis, White and Bates, and the first for the "ShibSibs."
Earlier, Davis and White helped Team USA earn the bronze medal in the inaugural team competition that included two performances each from the men, ladies, pairs and ice dancing. Davis and White finished first in each of the two ice dancing segments. The Russian Federation won the gold medal, while Canada claimed silver.
