Team USA's first four-time Olympian in figure skating and four University of Michigan sophomores were among the seven Wolverines who represented their countries at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
With National Hockey League players not participating for the second consecutive Winter Games, the United States and Canada both looked to the college ranks for assistance. Sophomores Matty Beniers (USA), Brendan Brisson (USA), Kent Johnson (Canada) and Owen Power (Canada) became the first U-M hockey student-athletes to play in the Olympics while in college. Also on Team USA were former Wolverines Steven Kampfer, an alternate captain, and Strauss Mann. Both teams reached the quarterfinal round.
Also in China was U-M graduate Evan Bates, the first American figure skater to compete in four Olympics. He and ice dancing partner Madison Chock won silver medals by helping the United States finish runner-up in the figure skating team event, and they finished just off the podium in fourth place in the ice dancing competition.
