Aaron Etchison completed his fourth season as the Wolverines' volunteer assistant coach.Etchison, who was hired on Sept. 6, 2012, assists with the catchers, including Cole Martin and Harrison Wenson. Martin was an All-Big Ten third team selection in 2013 and threw out 32 base runners in his final two years in the Maize and Blue, while Wenson was an All-Big Ten third team selection in 2016 and was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 39th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Etchison came to Ann Arbor after a two-year playing career at the University of Maryland. The Pendleton, Ind., native was a captain on the 2012 team that won 32 games, which was a 15-win improvement from 2010. The catcher threw out 14 of 26 base runners last season, which led the Atlantic Coast Conference percentage-wise for players who had enough attempts to qualify. As a junior, Etchison started 25 games for the Terrapins, hitting safely in nine of the team's last 11 games and serving as Maryland's primary catcher the second half of the season.
Before his two seasons at Maryland, Etchison spent his sophomore season at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla. He hit .276 in 47 games with 29 runs batted in. Etchison started his collegiate career at Ball State University, helping the Cardinals to the Mid-American Conference West Division title in 2009.
Etchison graduated from Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in finance from the Robert H. Smith School of Business in December of 2012.
