Cauli Bedran wrapped his first year as assistant coach for the University of Michigan swimming and diving program. He joined the staff in July 2018 as our volunteer assistant coach. Prior to that he served as an assistant coach at Bowling Green for one season.
In Bedran's first year as an assistant coach with the Wolverines, he helped out with the sprint group. At the NCAA Championships, he helped coach freshman Gal Groumi to a tenth-place finish in the 100 fly where he tied the school record. Groumi Also finished 11th in the 200 IM which broke the school record. At the Big Ten Championships, he coached Cam Peel, Bence Szabados, and Will Chan to the A final in the 50 free. Groumi finished third in the 100 fly and was crowned the Big Ten Champion in the 200 IM. In the 100 breast, he coached Can to a fourth place finish and Mason Hunter to an eighth-place finish. On the women's side, helped coach Olympian Maggie MacNeil to three gold medals in the 50 free, 100 free, and the 100 fly at the Big Ten Championships. Bedrean also coached Former NCAA Champion Olivia Carter to a first place finish in the 200 fly, a second place finish in the 100 fly and an eighth place finish in the 400 IM at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships he coached MacNeil to a third-place finish in the 50 free and 100 fly.Â
A native of Brazil, Bedran worked with head coach Mike Bottom and the sprint group during his first year in Ann Arbor. At Bowling Green, he focused on recruiting, academics and operations for the women's swimming and diving team while at Bowling Green. The Falcons finished fifth in the Mid-American Conference in 2018.
Prior to his stint at Bowling Green, Bedran spent one year as head swimming and diving coach and aquatics director for D-III Olivet College in Olivet, Mich. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Wayne State for six years, leading the men's and women's sprint group.
Bedran was a four-year letterwinner at Wayne State (2007-10), earning 24 All-America honors. He helped lead the Warriors to three top-three team finishes at the NCAA D-II Championships, including a runner-up finish in 2009. He was the 2009-10 Wayne State Male Student-Athlete of the Year and was inducted into the Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
Bedran graduated in 2010 with a degree in political science. While serving as assistant coach, he completed coursework for his Ph.D. in comparative politics.
