Bastien helped mentor the best-ever Wolverine women’s pole vault duo in 2021 as Jessica Mercier won the Big Ten Indoor Championships title and finished runner-up outdoors, and Mia Manson finished fourth in the Big Ten outdoors. She watched as Mercier tied Bastien’s own school record with a clearance of 4.25m (13-11.25) at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, where she and Manson became the first pair of Michigan teammates to clear 4.15m (13-7.25) in the same competition.
Under her guidance, Mercier has a Big Ten title, two silver medals, and another fourth-place finish.

She was a four-time All-American in the pole vault and three-time Big Ten runner-up, and still owns at least a share of both the program’s indoor and outdoor records in the event. She was also a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2014.
