CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team kept up its stingy defensive play as the Wolverines scored a 2-0 victory over Illinois and moved a game over .500 in the Big Ten Conference (4-3-1). It was the second straight shutout of the week for Michigan, which has gone more than two and a half matches (243:03 minutes) without allowing a goal.
The Wolverines led 1-0 at the half as Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) scored her fifth goal of the season at 16:50. Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) notched her fourth tally at 69:46 to provide Michigan with an insurance goal.
Jessica Jones (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) recorded her second shutout of the year, making seven saves in the match. This was the second shutout for the Wolverine keepers in as many games; Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) blanked No. 16 Indiana 2-0 on Friday (Oct. 9).
Michigan hosts Toledo in a non-conference contest on Wednesday (Oct. 14) at 4 p.m.at the Michigan Soccer Field.
