IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The ninth-ranked Michigan field hockey team ran its record to 9-2 by knocking off the Iowa Hawkeyes 2-0. The win moves the Wolverines to 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play and into a first-place tie with Ohio State and Penn State.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) was the star of the game for the Wolverines as she netted her seventh and eighth goals of the season. The first came with 29:10 remaining in the first half and was unassisted. The second came midway through the second half with an assist from Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS). With the two goals, Gannon upped her season total to eight and regained the team lead.
The Maize and Blue defense was again impressive as it allowed just nine shots and forced goalie Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) to make just one save in the game. Oakes now has four and a half shutouts on the season, just three shy of the school single-season record.
"It was another big win for us," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "I'm very happy with the way we came out and played, especially in a tough place like Iowa. We have to be ready for Northwestern now."
The Wolverines travel to Evanston, Ill., on Sunday (Oct. 4) to face the Northwestern Wildcats in another Big Ten match.
