DAYTON, OHIO -- Sophomore Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) scored twice and junior Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) continued to rewrite the school record books as the University of Michigan women's soccer team opened the 1998 season with a 3-1 victory over the University of Dayton on Friday night (Sept. 4).
Berendowsky assisted on Michigan's first goal, a blast from the top of the box on the left side by Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS), the seventh of her career. With the assist, Berendowsky set a new school record for career points with 73, one better than former Wolverine star Ruth Poulin (1994-97).
The star of the night for the Wolverines was Beitel, who scored two second-half goals to secure the victory. Beitel's first goal came at 49:55 off a rebound from the Dayton goalie to make the score 2-0 Michigan and the second at 85:05 off a rebound off the post to close the scoring. Beitel now has 16 career goals.
Michigan goalie Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) made two saves for the win.
Michigan returns to action Sunday (Sept. 6) at 1 p.m. CDT on the road at Butler.
