ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 1999 dual match season with a commanding 7-0 victory against William & Mary at the Varsity Tennis Center (Jan. 21). The Wolverines won their season opener for the fifth straight year and improved to 2-0 all-time against William & Mary.
Michigan gained a 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. The Wolverines and Tribe split matches at second and third doubles so the team doubles point came down to the match at No. 1 doubles. Junior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and freshman Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) won the deciding match with a tight 9-7 victory over 37th-ranked Trevor Spracklin and Lee Harang.
The Wolverines carried the momentum into singles and swept all six matches for the 7-0 victory. Wright came back from a first-set loss to defeat William & Mary's David Kenas in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 singles. Senior co-captain William Farah (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) beat Spracklin, ranked 81st nationally, in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) at second singles, while junior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the third spot. Michigan's freshman trio of McCain, Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) all won their first collegiate dual matches.
The Wolverines will host regional opponent DePaul on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will begin at 11 a.m., with the Michigan women's tennis team hosting Western Michigan immediately following the match at 2 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Brian Eisner
On the match overall ... "It was a great win, for our first dual match of the season. We didn't play well but our players fought hard and wouldn't give up. We definitely did not play our best tennis but this is a good accomplishment and great way to start the season. When it came down to crunch time, our guys just didn't want to lose. We need to take the next few days of practice and get ready from Sunday's match against DePaul."
On the play of William Farah ... "William played exquisitely today. He was really disappointed about his play at the Big Ten Singles Championships, and today he went out and beat a very good Trevor Spracklin, who is ranked 81st nationally."
