Cantin Repeats as Big Ten Athlete of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan senior Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) was named Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country by league officials on Wednesday (Oct. 13). This marks Cantin's second Big Ten Athlete of the Week award in as many weeks and his second of the season.
Cantin earned his second Athlete of the Week honor after placing first at the Murray Keatinge Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 9) in Orono, Maine, leading the Wolverines to their fifth consecutive Murray Keatinge title. Cantin's winning time of 24:21.16 is his second best of the season and ranks fourth overall in the Big Ten this fall.

At the Big Ten Conference Championships, Cantin has finished 24th (1996), eighth (1997) and 12th (1999). Cantin is enrolled in the Division of Kinesiology, concentrating in physical education.
In addition to Cantin, three other Wolverines are ranked in the top 10 of the Big Ten cross country season best times, tallying six different times in the top 10. Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) is third and sixth with times of 24:20 and 24:21, senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) is fifth with a time of 24:21 and Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) is ninth with a time of 24:30.
