Women's Tennis Falls 9-0 to No. 13 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped its fifth consecutive match Wednesday (March 24), losing 9-0 to No. 13 Notre Dame at the Courtney Tennis Center. The Wolverines dropped to 3-8 with the loss, while the Irish improved to 11-5 overall and won their 15th straight match against a Midwest regional opponent.
Notre Dame clinched the match in the opening singles play, winning all six contests for a 6-0 lead in the match. Michigan had its chances to earn points, though, as senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) forced her match at No. 4 singles to three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). Boylan won the first set against 56th-ranked Becky Varnum but lost the final two for the loss. She led 40-15 in each of Varnum's final two service games in the match but was unable to break and claim an advantage.
In matchups against nationally ranked singles players, junior Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) lost in straight sets against No. 8 Michelle Dasso (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 1 singles spot. Lund is currently ranked No. 97 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national singles rankings. Fellow junior Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) fought hard but was unable to upset No. 61 Jennifer Hall at the No. 2 spot (6-1, 7-6).
In doubles, the marquee doubles matchup between nationally ranked doubles teams helped the Irish claim the 9-0 shutout. No. 6 Dasso and Hall defeated No. 24 Lund and Hart by an 8-3 score.
The women's tennis team will return to Big Ten Conference dual match action with a pair of conference home contests. Michigan hosts Iowa Saturday (March 27) at 11 a.m. and plays Wisconsin Sunday (March 28) at 11 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
