ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team improved to 3-1 in the Big Ten Conference with a 5-2 victory over Iowa Saturday afternoon (March 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win ended a five-match losing streak for the Wolverines and raised their season record to 4-8. The loss dropped Iowa to 8-5 overall (0-1 in conference play).
The Wolverines fell behind 1-0 at the start of the match as the Hawkeyes won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. U-M sophomores Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) kept Iowa from a sweep in doubles by winning 8-6 at the No. 3 slot against Erica Johnson and Megan Kearney.
Michigan shook off the loss of the doubles point and dominated the singles play with victories in five of the six singles matches. The wins gave the Wolverines a 5-2 victory and their 17th victory all-time against the Hawkeyes. U-M has won six of the last seven matches between the two schools.
Junior Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS), ranked 98th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national singles rankings, defeated Iowa's Toni Neykova in straight sets at the No. 1 singles slot (6-4, 6-3) for her team-leading 11th win of the season (11-16). Lund's victory ended a five-match losing streak and was her first career victory playing at the No. 1 singles slot.
Fellow junior Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) ended a seven-match losing streak with a come-from-behind victory at the No. 2 singles spot. Hart dropped the opening set (6-1) to Natalya Dawaf but stormed back for a three-set win (1-6, 6-2, 6-4). The victory was Hart's seventh of the year (7-12).
Iowa's only singles victory came as Shera Wiegler fought back from an opening-set loss and five match points in the tie-breaker to defeat Fuzesi at the No. 3 spot (3-6, 7-6, 6-3).
Senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) posted a straight-sets victory (7-6, 6-4) over Iowa's Emily Bampton at the No. 4 slot. The win raised Boylan's record to 3-1 in conference play, 6-6 in dual matches and 7-10 overall.
Freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) won her second career dual match with a commanding straight-sets victory over Johnson at the No. 5 slot (6-1, 6-4). Vaughn improved to 4-12 overall on the season.
Sinclair continued her recent success with a three-set victory (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) over Kearney at the No. 6 spot. Sinclair has won three of her last four matches and is 9-10 overall on the season. She has a 2-2 mark in Big Ten duals.
