Wolverines Fall to Second Straight Top-10 Opponent

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team lost its second straight match in as many days to a top-10 ranked team, losing 7-2 to No. 9 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon (March 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 3-5 overall.
Wake Forest took an early 2-1 lead on Michigan, winning the first two doubles matches by 8-3 scores. The Wolverines scored their team point as sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) defeated Jackie Houston and Janet Bergman at the No. 3 spot (8-5).
In singles, the Demon Deacons put the match away by winning five of the six matches. The Wolverines' singles win came from senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy), who recorded a straight-sets victory (7-5, 6-4) over Jackie Houston at the No. 4 slot. Junior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) nearly claimed victory at the No. 1 spot, dropping a three-setter to Wake Forest's Mariel Verban (4-6, 6-3, 7-5).
The Wolverines will take 13 days off before returning to the court against Houston in Milwaukee, Wis. Michigan will face the Cougars Saturday, March 20, at Marquette University (9:30 a.m.) and play Marquette the following day (Sunday, March 21) at 10 a.m.

• The Wolverines are winless in three matches against Wake Forest all-time, losing 6-0 in 1994-95 and 7-2 during the 1996-97 campaign.
• Jennifer Boylan has won five of her last eight matches, raising her season record to 6-7 overall. The victory was also the 25th singles win of her career (25-23).
