MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped its third consecutive match Saturday afternoon (March 20), losing 5-4 to No. 39 Houston at the Marquette University Tennis Center. The Wolverines have a 3-6 dual match record on the year, while Houston improved to 4-2 with the win.
Houston grabbed an early lead in the match with victories at the first four singles spots. The Wolverines gained their initial points of the match as freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) and sophomore Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) posted wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. Vaughn defeated Houston's Sarah Bolle (6-1, 6-4), while Sinclair beat Kailey Meisinger (6-4, 6-2).
Trailing 4-2 heading into the doubles matches, Michigan needed wins at all three doubles spots to earn victory in the match. The Wolverines altered their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles lineup with positive results but were unable to sweep the doubles. U-M would lose the match 5-4 but received victories at the lower spots in the lineup.
Senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and Vaughn posted an 8-5 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, while Sinclair and junior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) collected an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Juniors Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS), listed No. 21 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, lost a tough 8-5 match to No. 31 Sarah Borwell and Galina Sellounina at the No. 1 doubles spot.
The Wolverines will complete their weekend trip Sunday morning (March 21) against Marquette, beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST.
