A Look at Bowling Green and the CCHA Tournament
Michigan, 3-2 against Bowling Green in CCHA Tournament history, will face the Falcons in the first round of the CCHA Tournament for the second time. The two teams meet for three games on March 3-5, 1989, at Yost Ice Arena, with Bowling Green taking the series two games to one. The Wolverines lost the first game 6-4, won the second game 4-1, and lost the final game 3-2 in three overtimes.
The Wolverines and Falcons have meet two other times in the CCHA Tournament. On March 11, 1990, Michigan beat Bowling Green 5-4 in the consolation game at Joe Louis Arena after losing to Michigan State in the semifinal game. The other occasion was two years ago, on March 14, 1997. Michigan defeated the Falcons 7-2 in a semifinal game en route to winning the CCHA Tournament with a 3-1 win over Michigan State.
Home Sweet Home in the CCHA Tournament
This is the 11th consecutive season Michigan has hosted the first round of the CCHA Tournament. In the previous 10 seasons, Michigan holds a record of 19-3 at home. Conversely, the Wolverines are 1-10 in five years of CCHA first-round games on the road.
Top o' the Bracket
This is the ninth consecutive year Michigan has been either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the CCHA Tournament. The last time the team was a lower seed entering the postseason was in 1990, when it was seeded fourth.
Trio Named to Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team
Freshmen goaltender Josh Blackburn, forward Mike Comrie and defenseman Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) were named to the Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie team. Both Blackburn and Jillson were selected to the team unanimously by a vote of the conference coaches.
Collegiate Firsts
In the game at Northern Michigan (Mar. 6), the Wolverines' Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) was called for a cross-checking penalty with 28 seconds remaining in the second period. The penalty was his seventh of the season for 14 PIM, both career-high numbers. Then, at the 4:02 mark of the third period, he added his seventh assist of the season, another career high. To cap of the night, Trainor scored the first goal of his collegiate career 10:33 into the final period after he took a pass at the left face-off circle and shot it past Northern's Dan Ragusett.
20 Wins Again
With the win on Saturday, Michigan secured a 20-win season for the 12th consecutive year. The last time Michigan did not win 20 games was the 1986-87 season, with a record of 14-25-1.
Solid After Two
Michigan is 100-0-4 in the last 104 games when leading after two periods. The streak dates back to Feb. 11, 1995, when Michigan led the University of Illinois-Chicago 4-3 after two periods before falling 5-4 in overtime.
Crunch Time
Senior assistant captain Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) leads the team and is second in the nation with six game-winning goals. Prior to this season, Rominski had played his entire career (109 games) without a game-winning goal.
Bubba on the Prowl ... With New Career High
Senior Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.) leads team defensemen, and is third overall on the team, in scoring with 28 points on seven goals and 21 assists. Berenzweig topped his previous career high of 19 points, established in both his sophomore and junior seasons, with an assist against Ohio State. With 78 career points, he has now entered Michigan's top-15 defensman scorers in 14th place and needs just two points to pass Greg Natale for 13th. Berenzweig is also tied with Bowling Green's Mike Jones (8-20-28) as the conference's top-scoring defenseman.
Leading the Way
Freshman Mike Comrie was the first player on the team this season to reach double digits in both goals (17) and assists (22). The last freshman to lead the Wolverines in goals was Denny Felsner (1989-92), who netted 30 goals in the 1988-89 season on his way to leading Michigan in goals for all four of his seasons.
Comrie remains the team's leading scorer with 39 points, eight better than Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.), the team's second-highest point scorer with 31. The last freshman to lead the team in points was David Roberts (1989-93) in 1989-90, when he scored 21-32-53 in 42 games. The all-time freshman scoring record belongs to Bruno Baseotto (1980), who scored 31-45-76 in 38 games during the 1979-80 season.
Leading the Way II
Mike Comrie leads the team in plus/minus with +18. In acquiring that number, Comrie has been plus in 18 games while finishing just five games with a minus. By finishing -1 on Feb. 6, Comrie broke a string of 19 consecutive games in which he had been even or plus, dating back to Nov. 14, 1998, at Notre Dame.
Racking Up the Minutes
Dale Rominski is fourth on the team in penalty minutes with 74 so far this season. For his career, Rominski has 271 penalty minutes, tied for 12th all-time at Michigan with Brian Lundberg.
Following close behind is teammate Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.), who has 98 PIM this season for a career total of 264 minutes. He is now 14th all-time at Michigan. The all-time Michigan leader in penalty minutes is Chris Tamer (1990-93) with 515 PIM.
Ironman Competition
Leading the way in the Ironman category are two of the seniors. Bubba Berenzweig and Sean Ritchlin (Conseco, N.Y.) have appeared in each of Michigan's 36 games this season. The other two players who have not missed a game are Mike Comrie and Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.).
