SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan's men's tennis team had its 11-match winning streak come to end Wednesday evening (April 14), losing a 6-1 match at Notre Dame. The No. 33 Fighting Irish swept all three doubles matches and five of the sixth singles contests to claim their 14th victory of the season (14-7), while the Wolverines fell to 14-2 overall (7-0 Big Ten record).
Notre Dame claimed the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. They completed the sweep as Trent Miller and Javier Taborga defeated senior co-captain William Farah (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and junior Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) by a close 8-6 score at the No. 2 slot. The Irish's 47th-ranked doubles team of Brian Patterson and Ryan Sachire ended a five-match winning streak for junior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and freshman Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School), winning 8-3 at the No. 1 spot.
After being swept in doubles for the first time this season, Michigan was unable to turn the match around and lost matches at the first five singles spots for the 6-1 setback. The Wolverines' lone victory came as freshman Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) beat Andy Warford in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 6 singles spot. Cox won his 16th straight match and improved his team-leading record to 23-4 on the season.
Michigan had opportunities to score other points in singles, losing three-set matches at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots. Farah won the opening set of his match at the No. 2 slot but dropped the final two sets for the three-set loss to Patterson (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). Long and freshman Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) forced their matches at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, respectively, to a third set with second-set wins but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Long dropped the match to Matt Daly (7-5, 4-6, 6-3) while Beam fell to Casey Smith (6-3, 2-6, 7-5).
Michigan will look to keep its seven-match Big Ten winning streak alive this Saturday (April 17) with a 1 p.m. match vs. Minnesota at the Varsity Tennis Center.
