Michigan Bounced by Wildcats to Cap Regular Season

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team concluded the regular season with a 6-1 loss at Northwestern. The defeat dropped Michigan's record to 4-16 on the season and 3-7 in the Big Ten Conference. Northwestern, the Big Ten champion, improved to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the league.
Michigan's lone point came at No. 2 singles, where junior Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) won a three-set match which featured two tie-breakers. Lund outlasted Shannon Duffy 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (4), handing Duffy her first defeat in Big Ten action since Feb. 15, 1998.
Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy), Lund's doubles partner, also played a closely-contested three-set match. Boylan, playing in the final regular-season match of her career, won the first set 6-4 but fell 0-6, 2-6 in the last two sets to Laura Guignon at the No. 3 spot. Boylan still leads the team with eight dual match victories on the season.
The Wolverines will conclude their season at the Big Ten Championship April 29-May 2 in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, will open play on Thursday (April 29).
