BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Robbie Reid's (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) two-run home run capped a five-run fifth inning, helping lift the University of Michigan baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Bowling Green Tuesday (April 6) at Steller Field. The five-run fifth helped the Wolverines rally from a 5-1 deficit and improve to 16-13 on the season.
Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) gave Michigan an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning, but the Falcons (12-11) scored twice in the bottom of the inning and added one in the second and two in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
Michigan took the lead for good in the fifth inning. After Mike Cervenak's (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS) groundout plated one run, Bryan Besco (Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS) drove in a run with an infield single and Bush tripled to right-center to make it a one-run game. Reid followed with his first career homer, a long blast to right field that was aided by a strong wind.
The Wolverines added single runs in the sixth and eighth to lead 8-5, but Bowling Green closed the gap in its half of the eighth. After the Falcons scored twice on a hit batsman, a walk, a sacrifice and a base hit, Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) came on to retire pinch hitter Len Elias and get out of the inning.
In the ninth, Korecky retired the first two batters and then avoided possible trouble with the help of catcher David Parrish's (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) hustling play. On Lee Morrison's infield hit, shortstop Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) threw wide of first, but Parrish was backing up the play and threw to Besco to nail Morrison, who had taken a few steps toward second.
Korecky picked up his fourth save of the season, preserving the win for Joe Young (Bishop Gallagher HS), who earned his first career victory (1-0). Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS) singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, his one-season best. Scales went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, raising his team-leading batting average to .366.
The Wolverines will host Eastern Michigan in a non-conference contest Wednesday (April 7) at 3 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium before returning to Big Ten Conference play with a four-game home series against Ohio State (April 9-11).
