ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan's weekend baseball opener with Ohio State was suspended by rainy weather after two innings with the score 0-0. The first game of the four-game series will be finished Saturday (April 10) starting at 11 a.m., with the regularly scheduled doubleheader to follow. The series concludes with a single game Sunday (April 11) at 1 p.m.
Michigan senior RHP Luke Bonner (Taylor, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) and Ohio State senior RHP Justin Fry each pitched two innings and each faced seven batters.
The defensive highlight of the game came in the top of the second inning as Ohio State's Chad Ehrnsberger and Jason Turner opened the inning with infield singles and Ehrnsberger reached third on a throwing error. With runners on first and third and nobody out, Bonner grabbed a grounder off the bat of Jason Driscoll and completed a '1-3-2' double play. Senior first baseman Bryan Besco (Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS) took the throw from Bonner for the first out and fired a strike to catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) for the tag-out on the sliding Ehrnsberger for the double play. OSU's Matt Middleton grounded out to end the inning.
OSU designated hitter John Mayor will be the first batter in the third inning as the delay started between the second and third innings.
In other Big Ten Conference action Friday, Minnesota defeated Iowa 5-3 and Indiana bested Purdue 18-4. Two other games -- Penn State at Michigan State and Illinois at Northwestern -- were postponed and will be played as part of Sunday doubleheaders.
