Wolverines Use Balanced Attack to Down Commodores
9/3/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The Wolverines (2-0) outshot the Commodores (1-2) 14-11 for the game as nine different Wolverines attempted a shot and six different players tallied a point. Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) scored her goal sandwiched between freshmen Abby Crumpton's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and Andrea Kayal's (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) first collegiate goals. Abby Tompkins (Grosse Point, Mich./University Liggett School), Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) and Shannon Poole (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) each picked up an assist in the game.
Crumpton, who had recorded a hat trick in Michigan's exhibition game against Clemson (Aug. 21) but was held scoreless in the Wolverines' regular-season opener at Oakland (Aug. 29), opened the game's scoring at 30:04, converting a feed from Tompkins. Spaccarotella added an insurance goal with 3:04 left in the first half off a feed from Schmitt. The goal was Spaccarotella's second of the season and marked the first time she has netted goals in back-to-back games since 1996. Kayal, a high school All-American last year, scored the lone goal of the second half, beating the final whistle by 17 seconds, with an assist from Poole.
Michigan returns to action at 1 p.m. CDT on Sunday (Sept. 5) when the Wolverines face host Missouri to conclude the Ellis Copy Tiger Invitational.

NOTES
-- Michigan has opened the season 2-0-0 for the third consecutive season. Last year the Wolverines opened with five consecutive victories, and in 1997 they opened with two victories en route to a 9-1-0 start.
-- The win marked Michigan coach Debbie Belkin's 80th career coaching victory. Belkin's teams have gone 80-47-12 (.619 winning percentage), including a 62-36-8 mark at Michigan and a 18-11-4 record while at Fairfield.
-- Carissa Stewart earned her 19th career victory. She needs one more win to become just the second Wolverine to record 20 career victories. Jessica Jones won 26 games for Michigan from 1995-98.
-- With goals in Michigan's first two games of 1999, Marie Spaccarotella has scored goals in back-to-back games for just the second time in her career. The first time was in 1996, when she scored against Detroit (Oct. 31) and then recorded a hat trick against Valparaiso (Nov. 3).
