INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) set a school record with eight points and tied another with three goals as the University of Michigan women's soccer team closed out the 2000 regular season with an impressive 7-1 win over Butler University on Sunday (Oct. 29) at Varsity Field.
Beitel scored three goals and added two assists for her eight points, one better than the previous record set by Amber Berendowsky with two goals and three assists against Illinois on Nov. 17, 1997. Beitel's hat trick makes her the first Wolverine to accomplish the feat more than once in a career.
Michigan got on the scoreboard first when sophomore forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) scored on a pass from Beitel at 18:40. Butler came back with a goal from Kara Bryan at 34:20 to even the score, and the teams went into halftime with a 1-1 tie.
The Wolverines started the second half strong, scoring just over a minute into the period on a goal by Beitel from Crumpton. Michigan's offense went ballistic, scoring two more goals in the next eight minutes. After Crumpton's second goal, at 49:12, Beitel scored again, this time on assists from sophomore Michelle Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) at 52:01.
Wilson, Pesiri and Bietel each scored a goal in remaining time to put the game away. Wilson caught a pass from sophomore defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne N.J./Wayne Hills HS) at 62:50. Beitel found the net again at 76:26, with an assist from freshman forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS), and Pesiri rounded out Michigan's scoring at 80:15, from Beitel's second assist of the day.
Beitel's three-goal game is the fourth in school history. Both Beitel and Ruth Poulin recorded hat tricks against Illinois on Nov. 17, 1997, and current senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) found the net three times against Valparaiso on Nov. 3, 1996.
The Wolverines (10-7-1, 6-3-1 Big Ten) will spend the next week preparing for the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held Nov. 2-3-5 in Champaign, Ill. The No. 3-seeded Wolverines, defending Big Ten Tournament champs, will face off against No. 6 seed Iowa on Thursday (Nov. 2) at 2 p.m. CST at First and Stadium Field.
