Michigan Dominates Wolverine Fall Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad competed for the first time this fall and dominated the field at the third annual Wolverine Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday (Oct. 6-8) at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines won all four divisions of the tournament and claimed the runner-up in three of those four categories.
A pair Wolverine freshmen battled for the Blue singles flight title, with Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) claiming a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS). Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) placed fourth, while sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./West Hampton Beach HS) took fifth place after DePaul's Szilvia Kelemen withdrew.
Michigan took the first five places in the Maize singles flight. Junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) won the title as sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) withdrew in the final. Senior Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) beat freshman Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) by a 7-5, 7-5 score to earn third place. Senior Marya Farah (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Western Michigan's Miriam Quintanilla for fifth place.
Freshman walk-on Lisa So (Midland, Mich.) won the Wolverine singles flight that was played in a round-robin format, posting a 4-0 record. So won three of the four matches in straight sets and claimed a come-from-behind, three-set victory over DePaul's Megan Stewart in her final match (3-6, 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-1 victory in the tie-breaker).
In doubles action, Michigan blistered the competition by taking the top three spots. Duprez and Tipirneni claimed a hard-fought victory over teammates Nolan and Plaushines, winning 7-4 in a tie-breaker (9-8 match score). Fuzesi and Vaughn finished in third place after claiming a 9-8 win over Bowling Green's Devon Bissinger and Abby Bratton (won 7-1 in the tie-breaker).
