U-M Knocks Out Ohio State to Advance to Big Ten Final
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In dramatic fashion, Kristi Gannon of the fifth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner with one minute remaining to pull off a 2-1 victory over 15th-ranked Ohio State at the semifinals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 4) at Ocker Field.
The top-seeded Wolverines looked like they were going to make quick work of the No. 4-seeded Buckeyes when Michigan produced several scoring opportunities in the first half, but Buckeye goalkeeper Allison Blanton made four outstanding saves to preserve the scoreless tie at the end of the first half.
At the beginning of the second half, Ohio State came out firing. Buckeye Marije Van Nouhuys nearly put OSU ahead when she clanked a shot off the post from a penalty corner. Minutes later, Ohio State's Jenee Doto was robbed by Michigan goalkeeper Maureen Tasch.
Michigan's Jessica Rose helped the Wolverines take back control of the contest when she put a rebounded shot in the net at 20:13 of the second. The Maize and Blue was pressuring the Buckeyes for the remainder of the game until OSU's Katie Hobson tied the game at 1:49. Gannon's goal came 49 seconds later to take the final score to 2-1.
The Wolverines (17-3) will head to the tournament final for the fourth consecutive season, and they will look for their second straight title in tomorrow's (Sunday, Nov. 5) 1 p.m. championship match against the winner of the semifinal between No. 2 seed Penn State and No. 3 seed Iowa.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the game ... "It was an excellent game; every time we play Ohio State it's a battle down the stretch. I was really proud of our team today."
On the team's confidence ... "We have a championship mentality, we have a confidence to never give up. We know if we work hard and stick to the game plan, good things are going to happen."
Michigan Sophomore Forward Jessica Rose
On her opening goal ... "You can say it was a case of being at the right place at the right time, but we do a lot of practice on Mo (goalkeeper Maureen Tasch) at getting to the net. I knew if I didn't get it, April (Fronzoni) or Courtney (Reid) was right there."
Michigan Junior Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch
On her save against OSU's Jenee Doto ... "I was pretty sure she was going right, so I just went that way and made the save. I think we are all pretty confident. I knew after they (OSU) scored we were going come right back and win it in regulation."
Michigan Freshman Defender Kristi Gannon
On her game-winning goal off the penalty corner ... "I just wanted to hit it as hard as I could, so if it didn't go in one of our forwards would be able to put it in. We knew in the huddle before the corner that we were going to score."
