ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan field hockey head coach Kristi Gannon Fisher announced Monday (May 11) the addition of Wolverine great Abby Tamer to her coaching staff as an assistant coach. Tamer, a 2024 Olympian and two-time NFHCA All-American, embarks on her collegiate coaching career after completing her eligibility.
"We are so excited to welcome Abby to our staff," said Gannon Fisher. "As a former captain, All-American and Olympian, she is one of the most accomplished student-athletes to ever represent our program. Abby brings invaluable experience from both her collegiate career and her continuing time with the U.S. Women's National Team.
"Her deep connection to Michigan and her passion for this university make her an exceptional addition to our program. I am excited to see her start her collegiate coaching career and the tremendous impact it will have on our student-athletes."
"I'm thrilled to come back to the program that has done so much for me as both a player and a person," said Tamer. "Growing up as a huge Michigan fan, being able to compete for this school and now having the opportunity to coach here is a dream come true, and I look forward to giving back to the team. The players on Team 54 are hardworking and driven to succeed, and I'm excited to use my experience to help them grow as athletes and leaders. Go Blue."
Last month, Tamer was named Michigan's 2026 female recipient of the prestigious Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor. Considered the highest honor bestowed by the Big Ten, the Medal of Honor recognizes excellence on and off the field throughout a student-athlete's college career. She became the third Michigan field hockey player to win the award.
Tamer was a two-time NFHCA All-American, earning first-team honors in 2024 and second-team recognition in 2025. She was twice a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team and was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team last fall. She also earned three NFHCA All-West Region honors in her career.
A two-time Michigan team captain, Tamer started 65 of 76 total games played over the last five seasons and accumulated 33 career goals, 26 assists and 92 points -- and finished just outside Michigan's top-10 leaderboard in all three categories.
She led the Wolverines in scoring in each of the last two seasons. Among her goals last fall, she boasted three late game-winners this season, all scored within the final three minutes of the fourth quarter -- including two in the final 30 seconds against Wake Forest and Stanford.
Tamer took an Olympic redshirt in 2023, after her sophomore year, to train with the U.S. Women's National Team and became the Wolverines' first Olympian in program history, leading Team USA in scoring with two goals in Paris. She scored the game-winning goal against Japan in the 55th minute of the Olympic Qualifier semifinal to qualify the USA to the 2024 Paris Games and also tallied the game-winner in a 1-0 win against India in the first pool game.
She will continue to train and compete with the USWNT.
Named the 2024 NFHCA National Division Scholar-Athlete as the first-team All-American undergraduate with the highest cumulative GPA, Tamer graduated from Michigan with a bachelor's degree in applied exercise science and a Master of Sport Management degree. She was named to the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team three times, is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree.
