PALO ALTO, Calif. -- In their second outdoor event of the 2000 season, the University of Michigan women's track and field team headed west to compete at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 25-26). The Maize and Blue boasted one NCAA provisional qualifier and four top-eight performances at the prestigious meet that featured more than 3,000 college and high school athletes.

Junior Katie Clifford (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) turned in Michigan's top individual performance, running an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:27.04 in the 3,000-meter run. She finished 14th in the race and became Michigan's first NCAA qualifier of the outdoor season.

The Wolverines' best event was the 400-meter dash, the only event in which they placed more than one competitor in the top eight. Coming in second was Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) with a time of 55.44. Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) finished fourth with a time of 56.19 and Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS) was eighth (56.50).

In the sprinting events, Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) came in eighth in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 14.12 to qualify for the Sunday's final, in which she finished ninth (14.29). Tamaka Craig's (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) time of 1:02.60 was good enough for ninth in the 400-meter hurdles, and Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) finished in eighth in the "B" section 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.34.

Michigan will take next week off but will be back on the road on April 8 to compete at the Purdue Quadrangular meet at West Lafayette, Ind.
