ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Iowa scored seven runs in the second inning and held on for an 8-5 win over the University of Michigan baseball team in the season finale for both teams on Sunday (May 14) at Ray Fisher Stadium. The Hawkeyes (19-35, 11-17 Big Ten) used the win to break the tie for seventh place with the Wolverines (20-32-1, 10-18 Big Ten) in the Big Ten Conference standings.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the first inning as junior catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) launched his 10th homer of the season, driving in senior/junior SS Bill LaRosa (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS). LaRosa had collected his seventh hit of the weekend series prior to the Parrish homer.
Iowa scored seven times in the second inning off Michigan starter and loser freshman LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS). Hill (1-4) retired five batters in the start, collecting four strikeouts. Hill finishes the season with a team-leading total of 53 strikeouts in 40 innings, but he also led the team with 42 walks.
Iowa DH Toby Humes had two singles in the second inning and knocked in two runs. The rally featured three walks, two hit batters, a wild pitch and the singles by Humes, CF Lance Guyer and LF Andy Jansen. Senior LHP Bryan Cranson (Bronson, Mich./Bronson HS) replaced Hill on the mound and worked 6.1 innings allowing just one more run. In the seventh, Humes singled, his third hit of the game, and scored on a single by Guyer.
Iowa RHP Dyson Miguel (2-2) worked the first five innings to get the win as he held Michigan to just 11 hits. Hawkeye bullpen ace Reed Pawelk worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his team-record-tying 12th save of the season.
Parrish closed out the season by going 3-for-4 with a pair of homers as he finished the season leading the team with a .356 batting average. He closed out the Big Ten season with a team-leading .415 average (39-for-94).
Sophomore 1B Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) led off the second inning with a long homer to center. It was his third homer of the year and his first career Fisher Stadium homer.
Parrish singled and scored in the third and the Wolverines had runners on second and third with no outs, but Miguel retired Trzos on a foul out to third and struck out the next two batters.
Parrish homered to lead off the fifth and that was the final run of 2000 for the Wolverines.
Iowa LF Andy Jansen provided the defensive keys for the Hawkeyes, saving two runs with his arm. In the first inning he threw out Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) at third just before the first Parrish homer, and in the fifth he threw Trzos out at the plate on a two-out double by senior RF Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS).
