Clifford Earns NCAA Provisional Mark in Third Event

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in a pair of meets on Friday (May 5), with four middle-distance and distance runners traveling to the Cardinal Twilight in Palo Alto, Calif., and a combination of middle-distance and field athletes traveling to the Chippewa Invitational in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The host school for the Cardinal Twilight was Stanford University, while Central Michigan hosted the Chippewa Invitational.
The top Wolverine performance of the two meets came from Katie Clifford (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), who ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:33.52 in the 5,000-meter run at the Cardinal Twilight. Clifford's pace of 16:33.52 is a Michigan season best for the 5,000-meter run and makes her the first Wolverine to own an NCAA provisional mark in three different events. Clifford also has NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 3,000-meter run (9:27.04) and 10,000-meter run (34:15.36).
Michigan's middle-distance corps provided the Wolverines with their only event championship of the two meets. Junior Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) won the 800-meter run at the Chippewa Invitational with a time of 2:13.31. White's time is her personal season best and the second fastest of the season by a Wolverine. Also at the Chippewa Invitational, sophomore Erin Massengale (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) earned a runner-up finish in the discus. Massengale's heave of 161-10 in the discus is a new personal best, while her mark of 41-0 1/2 in the shot put is her best distance in that event this season.
Michigan continues its busy weekend with a trip to Toledo, Ohio, for the Toledo Invitational on Saturday (May 6) and concludes the weekend with more competition at the Jesse Owens Classic on Sunday (May 7) in Columbus, Ohio.
