Wolverines Claim Four Event Titles at Toledo Invitational

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team registered four event victories and other impressive performances at the Toledo Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday (May 6). Multi-event athlete Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) led the way with a win in the heptathlon (2,684 points) and a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.02).

Joining Phillips as individual event winners were Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) in the pole vault and Julie Presley (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) in the hammer throw. Mullings led a Wolverine trio that took the top three spots in the pole vault, with a career-best vault of 12-0. Rounding out Michigan's top three vaulters were Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) in second (10-11 3/4) and Tiffany Sylvertooth (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) in third (10-0). Presley won the hammer throw with a toss of 152-0, while Michigan's final event title came from the 4x100-meter relay team, which raced to a season-best 46.37.

In addition to event winners, Michigan also dominated the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. Michigan owned five of the top eight places in the finals of the 100-meter dash, led by senior Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS), who raced to a Michigan season-best 11.70 to place second. Phillips ran a Michigan season-best time of 14.02 in the 100-meter hurdles to lead a U-M quartet that took four of the top six positions.

The Maize and Blue continues its outdoor campaign with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday (May 7) for the Jesse Owens Classic.
