ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan men's cross country team opened its season today (Tuesday, Sept. 5) by hosting the Michigan Open on the U-M Golf Course. The 8,000-meter race featured the 2000 Michigan team, with most of the Wolverines running unattached.

Senior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who will be redshirted this season, set the pace with a time of 24:45. Senior Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville HS) was not far behind at 24:50. The two battled at the front throughout the course, pulling away from the pack.

Four Michigan freshmen, running unattached, finished in the top eight spots, with Mason Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) in third, Dave Sage (Clarkston Mich./Clarkston HS) fifth, Andy Martin (Belmont, Mich./Rockford HS) seventh, and Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) ninth. Former Wolverine John Mortimer, who was running for Adidas, came in fourth (25:59). Sophomore David Cook (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) placed sixth (26:13).

Michigan's next meet is Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Huskie Invitational in Seattle, Wash., at 11 a.m. PDT.
