Wolverines Blank Yale for Second Straight Shutout

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team collected its second straight shutout, beating Yale by a 7-0 score Saturday (Jan. 27) at the Cullman Courts. The Wolverines (2-0) opened the dual match season by blanking Bowling Green at the Varsity Tennis Center (Jan. 19).
Michigan swept the doubles point with three dominating victories and carried the momentum into singles, winning four three-set matches and two straight-set contests. Junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) won 6-3, 6-3 over Susie Hiniker at No. 4, and freshman Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Lauren Muehl at No. 6.
Freshmen Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) came back from opening-set losses to post three-set wins. Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) split the opening two sets before winning in three against Biffy Kaufman at No. 3.
Michigan returns to action next Sunday (Feb. 4, 2 p.m.) against DePaul at the Varsity Tennis Center.
