Wolverines Drop Physical Contest at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team lost 4-2 at Michigan State in a physical battle on Sunday (Oct. 14).
Both teams played an aggressive game from the first whistle, but it was MSU that got on the board at 7:55 into the contest, converting its first of two penalty kicks. The second penalty kick came 20:10 into the game to give the Spartans the 2-0 lead. The Wolverines fought for the momentum, however, and rallied with a late first-half goal as Robert Wurth (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) scored unassisted on Spartan goaltender Mike Robinson to bring U-M within a goal.
Hoping to tie the game before halftime, the Wolverines continued with their aggressive style of play while racking up 15 fouls, but it was not enough as MSU scored with just six minutes remaining in the half. MSU was the first of the two teams to be served a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct, which came just after Wurth's goal. U-M also received a yellow card before the half.
The tough play on and away from the ball did not cease after halftime as U-M was called for 18 fouls and MSU was called for 12. Both teams each received another yellow card and Michigan goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) was served a red card with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
U-M cut the score by one goal for the second time as Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Prepatory HS) was set up by Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) at 60:29, but the Spartans got another goal at 79:32 for the 4-2 win.
Michigan's next game is at home Sunday (Oct. 21) against Wisconsin at 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
