MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team concluded play in the Florida International Invitational with a 4-0 loss to Furman University on Sunday (Oct. 28) at University Park.
The Paladins opened the scoring on a Michigan own goal that snuck past goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) at the 31:53 mark. It ended up being the only goal Zawacki would allow.
In the 43rd minute of action Zawacki was issued his second red card of the season, after he and John Barry Nusum got tangled up as they each went for a high free kick. As Zawacki went to punch the ball away he was called for an unnecessary force as his elbow apparently connected with Nusum. Zawacki will now be forced to sit out the team's next two matches due to NCAA regulations. The aftermath of that play resulted in two Michigan red cards, a yellow to Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) and a team yellow to Furman.
Freshman Bryan Lau (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) took over the goalkeeper duties, and Anthony Esquivel converted the ensuing penalty kick as the Paladins extended their lead to 2-0 at halftime. Then just over two minutes into the second half, Clint Dempsey sent a Nusum centering pass over an outstretched Lau from eight yards out, making the score 3-0.
The Wolverine defense contained Furman's high-powered offense for much of the second half, but with only six minutes remaining in the match Nusum deflected a Esquivel shot past Lau to push the score to 4-0.
Former Paladin Jody Keeling (Odessa Fla./Berkley Preparatory HS), who transferred to U-M this year, led the Maize and Blue with two shots, while J.J Kern (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) and Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) added one apiece.
The Wolverines (8-6-1, 2-3 Big Ten) look to even their Big Ten Conference record when they close out the regular season on Friday (Nov. 2), facing Ohio State at 7 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. The game date and time are changes from the U-M schedule which was originally announced.
