ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Cold weather froze the University of Michigan men's soccer team's offensive attack Sunday (Oct. 7) as the Wolverines were held off the board for only the second time this season, falling 3-0 to No. 6-ranked Indiana. The loss ended at five games Michigan's home winning streak (5-0-0) and overall undefeated streak (4-0-1).
Indiana jumped on the board early as freshman Mike Ambersley scored his first of three goals at the 10:22 minute mark. Ambersley took a Josh Reiher cross pass and sent it into the lower left corner of the net past goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS).
Ten minutes later Michigan, with a three-forward attack, was pushing the ball up field when Indiana intercepted a forwarding pass and began its counter attack. Ambersley scored his second goal of the day when he knocked the ball over a spiraling Zawacki for a 2-0 Indiana lead at 20:36.
The Wolverines had a few chances in the first half as Knox Cameron (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory), Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Andrew Balazer (Jackson, Mich./Northwest HS) all had shots on goal, but Colin Rogers made saves on each of them, and the two teams left the field at halftime with the score 2-0 in favor of Indiana.
Michigan came out in the second half looking to generate more of an offensive attack as it took the second-half kickoff and traveled into Indiana territory. As the Wolverines were attempting to move the ball into the box Indiana midfielder Tyler Hawley intercepted a pass and dribbled the ball up the right sideline. Once Hawley past centerfield, he kicked the ball ahead to Ambersley, who sent a line drive past a diving Zawacki to complete the hat trick at 47:14.
Michigan's defense kept the Hoosiers scoreless for the remainder of the match. Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory) had a scoring chance in the 77th minute of match as he rifled a shot into backup goalkeeper Jay Nolly's belly from 10 yards out.
Michigan (7-2-1, 1-2 Big Ten) looks to bounce back on Thursday (Oct. 11), when the Wolverines take on Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Salem High School in nearby Canton, Mich.
