Simpson Wins Triple Jump at USTCA Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team came in fifth place at the two-day USTCA Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Penn State University on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 9-10). The Wolverines were among 12 teams competing at the PSU Multi-Sport Facility. Michigan's efforts were highlighted by Teyonna Simpson's (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) win in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 41-8 3/4, making her the first Wolverine to qualify for the NCAA Championships this season.

Michigan's sprinters ran well again at a very high level on Saturday. Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) both had a good day with two top-10 finishes. Knazze placed seventh in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400, while Caruthers took ninth and third, respectively, in those events.

Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) led the distance group with a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter run, while Katie Easton (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) turned in a fine performance, coming in sixth in the mile run. Katy Radkewich (Hudson, Ohio/Beaumont HS) had U-M's best performance on Friday night with a fifth-place showing in the 5,000.

In the field events, Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) posted a mark good enough for fifth in the high jump. The shot put showed its depth as Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) and April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) came in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The Wolverines host the Harold Silverston Invitational next Saturday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Track Building at 10:30 a.m.
