Michigan Drops Final Two Games of Western Road Trip

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team dropped the final two games of its week-long California trip on Wednesday (Feb. 28). Competing against two teams tied for the No. 12 spot in the CWPA Top 20, the Maize and Blue fell 13-5 to San Diego State at the Bud Kearns Pool in San Diego before slipping 5-2 to Cal-San Diego at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla. Michigan (6-9-1) finished with a 2-6 record on its western road trip.
In the San Diego State contest, the Aztec defense held the Wolverines to only five goals during the game, two of which came from penalty shots. Sophomore Abbi Rowe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) scored twice for the Wolverines, with junior Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshmen Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Stephanie Rupp (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS) accounting for the remaining goals.
Michigan and Cal-San Diego entered halftime deadlocked at one goal apiece. The two teams remained tied 2-2 going into the final period of play, but the Tritons pulled away with a 3-0 run in the fourth. Michigan was unable to recover, despite 12 saves by freshman netminder Camille Clarendon (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS). Michigan received its two goals from senior Melissa Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and Rowe, who netted her third goal of the day.
Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for one day before trekking east for four games in the Southern Division Tourney on Saturday and Sunday (March 3-4) in Erie, Pa. The Wolverines will be splitting their time between Gannon University and Penn State-Behrend. Michigan opens play against Penn State-Behrend (12:30 p.m.) and Grove City (4:15 p.m.) on Saturday at the Recreation Center Pool on Gannon's campus.
