
Michigan Edged by Princeton, Falls Short of CWPA Championship Game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team fell to No. 13-ranked Princeton, 9-8, on Saturday (April 11) at Canham Natatorium in the CWPA Semifinals.
Emma Gustafsson led the Wolverines with two goals, including a fourth-quarter score that kept Michigan within striking distance.
After winning the opening sprint, Maddy Scarth put Michigan on the board just 20 seconds into the game. U-M and Princeton traded goals throughout the first quarter, ending the frame tied at 3-3. Issy Jackson and Emilia Mladjan also scored for the Wolverines, while Ari Karampetsou added two assists.
Princeton built a two-goal cushion in the second quarter before Brooke Ingram answered with a skip shot into the far corner. The Tigers carried a 5-4 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Lulu Hirschfield contributed two points, scoring off a pass from Riley Chapple before assisting on a Gustafsson goal to cut the deficit to one at 7-6.
The Wolverines conceded two early goals in the fourth quarter but responded with tallies from Karampetsou and Gustafsson. Michigan closed within one, but could not find the equalizer in the final minutes as Princeton held on for the 9-8 win.
Michigan will continue play at the CWPA Championships in the third-place game against Brown on Sunday (April 12) at 10:30 a.m. at Canham Natatorium. The game will be streamed on CWPATV, with live stats available on FOSH.
