U-M Finishes Second at Central Michigan Invitational
2/3/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field
Michigan won four events on the day, all on the track, and three of the Wolverines' individual winners broke Central Michigan Field House records.
Michigan was strong in all aspects on the track throughout the day. In the sprints, Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) won the 60-meter dash (7.64), with teammate Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) right behind her in second, only three hundredths of a second behind (7.67). Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) had a pair of runner-up finishes, in the 200 and 400, posting times of 25.05 and 56.08, respectively.
The Wolverines were dominant in the middle-distance races as well. Senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) started things off by winning the 600-meter dash, in a field house record time of 1:33.11. But it was the 800 where the Maize and Blue shined brightest of all, taking the top three spots, led by Rachel Sturtz's (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse HS) facility record time of 2:13.42. Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) came in second and third, respectively.
The distance races were also beneficial to Michigan as Jazwinski added to her third-place finish with a victory -- and field house record -- in the mile. In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) placed second with a time of 10:10.0.
In the lone relay of the day, the Wolverines were edged out by less than half a second in the 1,600-meter relay by Purdue and finished second.
Michigan did not win any field events but did turn in some fine performances. Mullings took third in the pole vault with a mark of 11-6 1/4. Freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) had her second straight runner-up finish in the shot put, with teammate Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) coming in third.
Up next for the Wolverines is a trip to State College, Pa., for the Nittany Lion Qualifier next Friday (Feb. 9) for a two-day meet.
