U-M Downs ACC Foes to Open Fifth Varsity Season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team opened its fifth year of varsity competition with victories over Virginia and North Carolina today (Saturday, March 24) on Lake Monticello. The Wolverines won three of four varsity races against the host Cavaliers and won both varsity races against the Tar Heels.
The Wolverines spent the winter training with a new conditioning program, and it showed. The Wolverines defeated one of their most intense rivals, Virginia, by over eight seconds in the first varsity eight race. Michigan crossed the line in 6:32.6, while the Cavaliers finished in 6:40.8. Michigan's second varsity eight and first varsity four also won their races against Virginia. The second varsity four finished second.
Against the Tar Heels, Michigan's first varsity eight posted a time of 6:27.9 and finished nearly 25 seconds ahead of the North Carolina first varsity eight (6:51.5). Michigan raced two second varsity eight boats and finished first and second. The Michigan "A" boat had a winning time of 6:43.6, while the Michigan "B" boat finished in 6:51.5 and the North Carolina boat was last (7:22.0).
The Wolverines have next weekend open before they make the hour trip to East Lansing, Mich., to row against intrastate rival Michigan State on Saturday, April 7.
