Wolverines 12th Going into Final Round of Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team shot its second straight round of 308 Friday (May 11) and held its position in the standings at the NCAA East Regional at North Carolina's Finley Golf Course. The Wolverines are in 12th place (308-308/616) heading into Saturday's final 18 holes.
Three Wolverines improved their scores from the first round, led by junior LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), who carded a two-over-par 74 to jump into a tie for 31st place (78-74/152). Sophomore Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) is Michigan's individual leader through 36 holes, sitting in a tie for 25th after a 76 in the second round (75-76/151).
Junior Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) shot 78 in the second round, shaving a stroke off her first-round score and moving into a tie for 63rd (79-78/157), where she is joined by junior Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS), who followed her opening-round 76 with an 81 Friday. Junior Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) fired an 80 and sits in 95th place (84-80/164).
Duke maintained its hold on first place, shooting 291 Friday to sit one over par (577) after 36 holes. Auburn, the only school within sight of the Blue Devils, used the best team round of the day (290) to move to 584, seven shots behind Duke.
Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke is in first place in the individual standings with her six-under total of 138 (65-73), while teammate Candy Hanneman used the best individual round of the day (68) to move into second place at 140 (72-68), two shots behind her fellow Blue Devil. South Carolina's Kirsty McPherson is also beating par for the tournament, at two under (73-69/142).
The NCAA East Regional concludes Saturday (May 12) with 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. The top eight teams and two top individuals not on one of the qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be contested May 22-25 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
