EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season by defeating Wisconsin-Green Bay 1-0 today (Sunday, Sept. 2) at the Michigan State Invitational. Sophomore Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) scored the game-winning goal at the 86:00-minute mark off a corner kick from senior co-captain J.J. Kern (Trenton, Mich./Lake Orion HS).
Michigan dominated the game offensively, out-shooting Wisconsin-Green Bay 19-8 for the match. The Wolverines had eight shots in the first half, but the game remained scoreless at halftime.
The difference in the match was U-M's relentless pressure on offense. Junior Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit), sophomore Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Caro HS) and sophomore Andrew Balazer (Jackson, Mich./Northwest HS) each had four shots. The Wolverines also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, six of which came in the second period, including the game-winning assist from Kern.
Redshirt freshman Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) was steady in goal with three saves for the shutout.
Michigan looks to win its third game in a row when the Wolverines have their home opener against Cleveland State on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7 p.m. on Elbel Field.
