BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell 4-2 against No. 14-ranked California on Sunday (Sept. 2) in the fourth game of the Cal Invitational.
Sophomore Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) scored her first of two goals early in the first half as she dribbled into the left side and fired a shot off the far post for the 1-0 lead. U-M held off the Golden Bears until late in the first half when Laurie Schott scored on a similar play as Sullivant's to tie the game at one goal apiece.
The Wolverines remained strong offensively and took a 2-1 lead into halftime on Sullivant's second goal of the game, which came from freshman Theresea Dwyer's (Metairie, La./Mt. Carmel Academy) 25-yard throw-in.
Early in the second half, however, Cal's Kyla Sabo scored back-to-back goals that were nine minutes apart to give the Golden Bears a 3-2 lead before Kassie Doubrava capped the win with a four-yard shot from in front of goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School).
Cal outshot the Wolverines 19-12, while Grech made seven saves in her first game of the season.
Michigan returns home for a two-match non-conference homestand, facing Kentucky on Friday (Sept. 7) at 4 p.m. and Dayton on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game against Cal ... "We played 60 minutes of great soccer. We had the lead going into the half, we had the momentum and we were creating opportunities, but we didn't play 90 minutes of great soccer. We paid for it too."
On sophomore defender Amy Sullivant's performance ... "Amy is our most dangerous player right now. She is making good decisions with the ball."
