Wolverines Cruise Past Gophers in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by senior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and sophomore Chris Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated Minnesota 212.350-204.750 on Saturday (Jan. 19) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Kenna captured event titles on the vault (9.100) and horizontal bar (9.200), finished third on the floor exercise (8.800) and placed fourth on the parallel bars (8.650). Gatti was crowned the all-around champion with a score of 51.500. Contributing to his all-around total were two third-place finishes, on the parallel bars (8.800) and horizontal bar (8.750).
Junior Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) followed up his strong opening weekend by earning the parallel bars championship with a 9.000. Also capturing event titles were freshman Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) on the floor exercise (9.000), senior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) on the pommel horse (9.600), junior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) on the still rings (9.700) and senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS), who tied Kenna for first on the vault (9.100).
The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (Jan. 26, 7 p.m.), facing top-ranked Penn State in the BMG Showdown at Cliff Keen Arena.
